The Significance of Uttarāyana and Makar Sankranti

Uttarāyana or Uttarayan, is the six-month period that occurs between Makar Sankranti day of the Vedic Calendar around January 14th and Karkataka Sankranti (also known as Karkataka Sankramanam) around July 14th or 15th, when the Sun travels towards north on the celestial sphere.

The name Uttarayan comes from joining of the two Sanskrit words “Uttara” (North) and “ayanam” (movement towards). Uttarayana is the day when the sun starts to travel towards north direction as a sign of coming summer.

The reason for what we know the seasons occurs is based on tropical Sun. This is due to earth’s tilt of 23.45 degrees. Earth rotates around the Sun with this tilt. When the tilt is facing the Sun we get summer and when the tilt is away from the Sun we get winter. Because of this tilt it seems like the Sun travels north and south of the equator. This motion of the Sun going from south to north is called Uttarayana.

The period from July 15th to January 13th is known is Dakshināyana or Dakshināyanam. This is the period when Sun . .

This results in overall benefit, prosperity and success for the performer. January 23rd 2011 (Sunday): Thyagaraja Aradhana Day: Saint Thyagaraja, the greatest devotee of Lord Sri Rama and was one of the most saint composer of Carnatic music (Indian Classical Music). Thyagaraja Aradhana day is dedicated to him out of respect and love as a tribute for this Musical Saint Composer. Thyagaraja Aradhana 2011 date is January 23rd in USA (24th January in India). The musical festival is held during this period for five days in his remembrance. The festival is held at Thiruvaiyaru near Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu where the Sri Rama temple was built from where this Saint hails. The festival is now celebrated all over the world by the Lord Rama devotees and also by all the Carnatic music lovers. The observed day for Thyagaraja Swamy Aradhana is on the fifth day during the Krishna paksha or waning phase of moon in the Telugu month of Paush or Pushya masam.

January 29th (Saturday) 2011: Sattila Ekadashi: The Vedic Yagya Center will be celebrating this special day by performing in an exclusive way. VYC will be performing Narayana Maha Mantra Homa. This is done for the Appeasement of Lord Narayana, who is the Most Powerful and Benevolent Protector for the Salutation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Narayana.

January 30th, 2011 (Sunday): Pradosham: The Vedic Yagya Center will be performing Pradosham. Which means Vydic Yagya Center will be performing Laghu Rudrabhishekam. On this day, a special short Rudrabhishekam and Archana will be performed to the Sacred Shiva Lingam (also Known as ‘Pindi’) for His blessings followed by the Sacred ritual of Rudra Homam. Participants for Pradosham will be blessed and benefited with good health, prosperity, eradication of poverty and all their desires will be fulfilled. Interested people may signup for either individual or group sponsorship. Individual or Family Sponsorship is $51.00 for this whole event.

January 31st, 2011 (Monday): Masa Sivarathri: The Vedic Yagya Center will be performing Sahastra Lingarchana on this day. VYC will be doing this by Rudram in the presence Lord Shiva. The unique feature of this Lingarchana is that while chanting Rudram, the Vedic Pundits make small 1116 Shiva Mruthika Lingas and arrange them in the form of Shiva Linga in a very sanctified and most purified atmosphere along with the Vedic chanting on this auspicious day. This image is called Kailasa Prasthara (The Abode of Lord Shiva as show in below picture image) with 1,116 mruthika Shiva lingas arranged in 16 Avaranas and invoking Lord Shiva’s Divine Energy in each of the Shiva Linga’s. A picture showing the Kailasa Prasthara in completion is given below. This was done in the recent past of last Karthika masa.

Sponsors for this will be blessed with good Health, Prosperity, Spiritual Enlightenment and will thus attain, Moksha (Salvation) in Shiva Sannidhyam (presence of Lord Shiva). shivaThe Vedic Yagya Center will be performing a very special Daily Rudrabhishekam Yagya on a monthly subscription for prosperity, protection and health improvement, and especially for longevity. These Yagyas will be performed in the USA and run for an entire month at a time.

Individuals and families may sign up. The sponsorship fee is $31.00 per person, per month. That is just $1.00/day per person!

Annual subscriptions are welcome. If you sign up for a whole year, you save almost 20%. The annual subscription is just $301.00.

Prasadams (some of the items used in the yagya) will be mailed to your address.

Note: This is different from the Daily Yagyas, which cost 10x as much. We want to offer a more affordable option to those who cannot afford the Daily Yagyas. These yagyas are designed to still provide some benefits but at a lower cost.
